A lot of clients ask me what is Moxibustion. Moxibustion is a type iron therapy invented about 9000 years ago in China. Back then, Chinese ancestors realized the bonfire can heal the muscle aches from chasing animals when hunting for food. Later, During Spring and Autumn period in Chinese history (about 771 BC to 476 BC), countries within China fought against each other for treasure and/or lands. when soldiers travelled far to attack another country. The most difficult supply they could carry was water. Clever individuals found out that burning dry mug wort can help detect underground water source. Therefore, when traveling far, soldiers would carry dry mug wort with them. When it is time to camp, they piled up the herb on the ground and burnt them. After a short while, they would observe smoke coming out from surrounding areas, 90% + of the time, they would soon find the clean water source after digging down where the smoke came out. Not only used for finding water, elite Chinese medicine practitioners soon applied the herb in treating water related diseases in human and domesticated animals.
By burning the moxa (Japanese translation for dry mug wort) above the skin, or burning the small fine grounded mug wort over slices of ginger, natural salt, cured aconite root, diseases such as food poisoning, diarrhea, edema, vomiting, shingles, to name a few, can be quickly treated without any side effects. Mug wort is usually harvest around May in Chinese, people also use the young leaves and glutinous flour to make tasty pastries, called Qing Tuan (青团)
This herb is great in detoxifying Liver an Stomach/Spleen channels, The herb can also be drank as tea regularly.
Regular moxibustion therapy can prevent diseases, hence it is a great way of promoting restoration of health, i.e., regimen (养生,Yang Sheng).
2. Understanding moxibustion treatment results
This time, I want to talk about how moxibustion actually work and how can one know what kind of physical problems s/he has by observing the result of moxibustion.
Mug wort usually grows in swamp or near water, So we know it is a yang herb, which indicates that the herb can be used to conjugate Yin type diseases. When burning it close to the skin surface around the acupuncture points, it promotes Yang element to move rapidly along certain meridian. As a result, blood circulation is improved. That leads to faster metabolism on the cellular level. With faster metabolism, toxins and waste water (Yin elements) are pushed out of cells, being flushed into blood stream and eventually discharged from the system. This process resembles the plumbing system, the moxibustion is like the drain opener, each acupuncture point is like the connector trap where clots accumulate over time.
Then what do you know about one's health condition by observing the moxibustion results on his/her skin? This normally requires years of training and practice in order for one to fully grasp the skill. Here is a brief illustration of what health message moxibustion tries to alert you:

In the first roll, the change of skin color showed different pathologies. The darker the skin color on the area of moxibustion treatment, the more serious the qi and blood blockage are. The blisters in the second roll showed overwhelming dampness condition in the body system. One may think it s a sign of scalding, but as a matter of fact, it is a symptom of one's health condition. In Chinese medicine term, it is call scaring moxi (疤痕灸),aiming to surface the deeper pathogens.
